Seven checks before you enter

1. A named promoter. You should be able to see which company runs the draw and is responsible for the prize.
2. Full written terms. Look for eligibility, the entry limit, the prize, the closing date and how the winner is picked.
3. A closing date and a draw date. Open ended draws with no dates are a warning sign.
4. No payment to enter, unless the terms clearly explain a paid route and a free route.
5. No payment to claim. A real promoter does not ask winners for a release fee, tax or courier charge.
6. A clear contact method. The terms should say how and when a winner is contacted.
7. Sensible data requests. Be wary of anyone asking for bank logins, card PINs or passwords.
