Switching Energy Supplier in the UK: What Actually Happens

Switching energy supplier in the UK is handled by your new supplier. Ofgem says suppliers must complete the switch within 5 working days and you can cancel within 14 days if you change your mind. Your gas and electricity keep flowing while the supplier changes. You may pay an exit fee if you leave a fixed tariff early. This guide explains the steps, and how to get a free Utility Warehouse comparison when you enter the free £20,000 cash prize draw.

Part of Free Household Bill Comparison: How the UW Comparison Works.

Before you switch

Ofgem advises comparing tariffs first, and notes the best option may be with your current supplier. To get an accurate comparison, have your latest bill to hand. You need:

  • your postcode
  • the name of your current supplier and tariff
  • what you pay per unit (kWh)
  • how much energy you use in a year

If you are on a fixed tariff, check its end date. Leaving before the end can mean an exit fee. Source: Ofgem, switching energy supplier (opens in a new tab).

The switching steps

  1. Choose a supplier and tariff. Compare what is available for your address, including staying with your current supplier.
  2. Give the new supplier your details. They need your postcode, current supplier and tariff, unit rate and yearly usage from your bill.
  3. Let the new supplier manage the switch. They contact your old supplier and tell you when the switch will happen. Ofgem says it must be done within 5 working days.
  4. Take a meter reading on switch day. Send it to both suppliers so your final bill and first bill are accurate. Smart meters may send readings automatically.

If you owe money or are moving home

Ofgem explains that you can often still switch if you owe your old supplier money, depending on how long the debt has been outstanding and your meter type. If you are moving home, you can choose a new tariff or supplier after you move in. The details are on the Ofgem page linked above.

Questions

Will my gas or electricity be cut off when I switch?

No. Switching changes who bills you, not the pipes, wires or meter supplying your home. Your new supplier arranges the move and tells you when it will happen.

How long does an energy switch take?

Ofgem says suppliers must switch your electricity or gas within 5 working days. If they do not, the new supplier must pay you compensation automatically.

Can I change my mind after agreeing to switch?

Yes. Ofgem says you can cancel your switch within 14 days.

Can I switch if I rent?

If you pay the energy supplier directly, you can usually choose your supplier. Ofgem advises checking your rental agreement first for any clause about suppliers.
